Or you can take those clippings and add them to your vegetable garden area or compost pile. Leaves and clippings from perennials and small shrubs can be used as mulch, composted or added straight back to the soil. Larger items like branches can be chipped and used as mulch or cut into smaller sections and composted or added back into the soil though, admittedly, larger branch cuttings will take a long time to decompose. By using your plant waste, which isn't waste but black gold due to its organic matter, you increase the organics in your soil, lessen your dependence on fertilizers and keep plant waste from filling up landfills.
However, when trying to reduce a resource demanding landscape you might consider eliminating your lawn or at least reducing the lawn size down to only what you really need. All of these practices can help limit the use of purchased resources as well as the time needed to keep up the lawn.
Now, in part three, we'll finish with some more practices associated with sustainable landscapes. Those include considering the resources demanded by lawns, cutting down on plant waste, and, most importantly, enjoying what you develop.

Lawn grass by itself doesn't have to be a problem for our environment. Just like other plants, grass absorbs pollution and helps slow down water movement, allowing more infiltration through the soil. Also, grass can be quite enjoyable to play on, but it can require more maintenance and inputs than other landscape features. Maintenance and inputs can be lowered if you adjust your expectations for instance, by not thinking the lawn should look perfect during our hot, dry summers. Allowing your grass to grow longer, not over fertilizing or incorrectly timing fertilizations, and understanding that lawn grass blemishes aren't necessarily a real problem but are just part of the life of grass can really help.
Many people think sustainable landscaping means organic landscaping. I think this is due to their belief that if you aren't organic you aren't sustainable and you are using products harmful to the environment. This isn't an accurate representation of what is often happening. While it's true homeowners can be the worst when it comes to over applications of chemicals or needless applications, many landscapes aren't considered organic simply because someone might use Michael Kors Ava Medium Black a commercial or non ORMI certified organic product on the landscape. Their landscapes never have pesticides applied to them, and every year they add organic matter back to the soil. Many also use all of their organic plant wastes on site.

Plant diversity, with its various plant forms, colors and flowers, can provide a wealth of interest. Added to this are the insects plants bring to our yards. Most Michael Kors Ava Cherry

Part two of the series focused on practices associated with sustainable landscapes. We discussed the importance of placing plants in the right cultural conditions and correctly applying water, using deep but infrequent irrigations for landscapes.
In the first part of this three part series, I defined the term sustainable landscapes and we determined that plants, whether native or not, need to be suited to our environment and ideally should only require a reasonable amount of resources to stay healthy.

are benign, but many are beneficial, since very few insects are considered bad. Your landscape also provides opportunities for birds and other animals, which can increase your connection to nature. Your space should be inviting and useful to you and your family, which means that all spaces aren't going to be alike but all can be enjoyed.
