In the fall of 1967 Piwowarski would begin a relationship with the school that would last over 40 years, including 22 as varsity football coach. There would be football championships at BG, and memorable games, like the initial Michael Kors Purses Blue

One of this year's three newest members, Steve Norris, did some of his best work at halftime, as band director of Nashua High School's Royal Purple Marching Band for over four decades.

He was the football, basketball and baseball coach at Spring Street Junior High in 1966 when he was recruited to handle all three jobs, along with athletic director, at Nashua's newest high school, Bishop Guertin.

The Hall of Michael Kors Brown Suede Bag Fame already covers a wide spectrum of involvement in Nashua sports. Inaugurated into the first class last year was longtime Nashua broadcaster, the late Ed Lecius, who chronicled many high school victories over the season as a radio play by play announcer.

Piwowarski and his wife had five children, all of whom would play at Holman Stadium at one point or another. His daughter Celeste helped start the varsity volleyball program at Nashua High School.

He had visited the stadium as a spectator, gone to clinics conducted by the minor league Nashua Dodgers, and peered through the gates at his personal field of dreams when the stadium was closed.

Growing up in Nashua in the 1940s, there was one sure way to perform on the hallowed field at Holman Stadium, and young Richard Piwowarski knew what it would take to get there.

While Tebbetts and Landry achieved great success after leaving Nashua, it was like Piwowarski never left. A member of Nashua's state championship baseball team in 1951, he returned, after college and military service, to teach and coach under a pair of legends 2009 inductees Buzz Harvey and Tony Marandos often running practices at Holman alongside 2009 inductee Fran Tate, Nashua's longtime track and field coach.

In the 1968 NFL draft, Landry was chosen in the first round (11th overall) by the Detroit Lions. He was the first quarterback selected that year, in a draft class that included UCLA quarterback Gary Beban, the Heisman Trophy winner.

Piwowarski was back at Holman on the Fourth of July, introduced as one of the three newest members of the Nashua Sports Legends Hall of Fame, initially introduced last year by the American Defenders baseball team but now organized by the Nashua Lions Club as part of their "Lions in Sight'' project.

But in terms of athletic achievement on the field, it will be impossible to top the third newest member of Nashua's Hall of Fame, Greg Landry.

No Nashua athlete in history achieved the level of success Landry achieved in the professional ranks. The 1964 Nashua graduate went on to play quarterback at the University of Massachusetts and was named all Yankee Conference twice.

The rugged Landry could also run with the ball, rushing for over 2,600 career yards and 21 touchdowns. He rushed for over 500 yards in both the 1971 and 1972 seasons.

Ken Stabler was chosen near the end of the second round.

The only Nashua native to approach Landry's success as a professional athlete was longtime major league catcher George "Birdie'' Tebbetts, part of the inaugural Hall of Fame class last summer.

"It was nice to be back there with my family at my side,'' said Piwowarski, who underwent emergency heart bypass surgery last Christmas Eve. "I'm sure there were very few in the crowd who knew who we were. Nashua has changed a lot over the years.''

passers in Lions history, he moved on to the Baltimore Colts in 1979 and passed for a career best 2,932 yards, filling in when starter Bert Jones suffered a season ending injury.

That was where Piwowarski would make his Holman debut, at the age of 12. He's visited the stadium hundreds of additional times over the years, as a player, coach and athletic director.

In an NFL career that spanned 25 years as both a player and coach, Landry had some big years, passing for 2,237 yards and 16 touchdowns in 1971 and earning a selection to the Pro Bowl.

Each of Nashua's nine political wards had its own baseball team at the time and each had its own home field. But the championship each summer was held at Holman.

He would last as a player until 1984, including a brief stint in the United States Football League (USFL).

Severe underdogs going into the game, the game ended in a 12 12 tie that would feel more like a victory to Piwowarski.
