A crowd of about 40 gathered outside the Veterans Memorial Building on March 7 for the dedication, most wearing T shirts that read: "All gave some. Some gave all. Godspeed Chachi."
Council, businesses and veteran's groups involved. They raised about $10,000 through sweatshirt and T shirt sales and private donations, and commissioned sculptor Richard Rist to make the memorial.
"He loved us. He protected us. And he died for us," Arnie Corral said.
She described her son as an athletic baseball and soccer player who had a large circle of friends. "He made everyone feel like he was their best friend," she said.
Corral, addressed the crowd, standing in front of American flags and the Fallen Hero Memorial a bronze likeness of a helmet propped atop an inverted M 16 rifle standing between a pair of boots, called a Battlefield Cross. The group's fundraising efforts were so successful that they formed the Semper Fi Foundation to continue raising money to support severely wounded Marines and their families, Chachi's mother, Denise Corral, said.
"He was a great kid. Great athlete. Real bright," said a solemn Gary Schuitemaker, Chachi's great uncle.
"Chachi gave his life for each one of us and we need this as a reminder," Mayor Candace Anderson told the crowd.

"Chachi was a big part of all of our lives," Hack said, adding that the purpose of the memorial is to keep his memory alive.
The Danville Fallen Hero Memorial will be permanently placed on the side of the Veterans Memorial Building facing East Prospect Avenue.
